Assorted manuscripts and photographs pertaining to Howard A. Anderson, a former resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who served onboard the U.S.S. Arizona as a seaman second class during World War I. During the war, Anderson underwent training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and on the battleship U.S.S. Connecticut. After the war, he was a crewman on the Arizona as it escorted President Woodrow Wilson to France for peace talks, and also participated in the protection of Americans at Smyrna (modern-day Izmir), Turkey. The manuscripts include service records, letters, membership and identification cards, a biography, and a newspaper clipping of his obituary. There are two letters in the collection that were written by Anderson to his mother after the war ended. He expresses concern for the financial welfare of the family and even suggests trying to leave the Navy early in order to help provide for them. The biography, entitled "Howard Adolph Anderson, 1897-1964," was written by his grandson, David R. Homan, and provides background on Anderson and his family. The photographs include a group shot of the landing force at Smyrna, two images of the harbor at Smyrna, and a portrait of Anderson in uniform holding a rifle. In one of the Smyrna photographs, Anderson identified the Allied Naval ships by nationality in the harbor. The other shows an encampment of Greek troops next to the ruins of a castle located above the city.
